Energy-saving windows for the Florida heat

What to look for in frames, glass and installation.

Every homeowner looks for ways to save on bills, and one of the best ways to save during a Gulf Coast summer is with energy-saving windows. Windows that keep the heat out and the cool air in save money all through the hot months. Here is what to look for.

The frame is important

  • Wood: great insulation, but much more upkeep. In rainy or humid climates there is real potential for rot. A well-built wood window lasts a long time in the right conditions.
  • Aluminum: good for rainy and humid climates and common in hurricane-prone areas, where they meet strict building codes. They don’t insulate as well, so they are less practical if energy savings is the goal.
  • Vinyl: excellent energy efficiency. High-quality vinyl windows often use insulated glass and very tight construction that reduces heat and air-conditioning leakage. A great option on a budget, with fewer color choices.
  • Wood-clad: a wood interior for insulation and a vinyl or aluminum exterior for low maintenance. In wetter climates, expert installation matters so they don’t suffer water damage.

The glass matters too

What is inside the frame is just as important. Talk with your window provider about the best options for your home and budget. Good things to look for:

  • Double-pane glass
  • Triple-pane glass. Some of our triple-pane windows are five times more energy efficient than standard double-pane and come with several layers of Low-E coating.
  • Low-E glass
  • Sealed argon gas fill

For the most energy-efficient windows, look for the National Fenestration Rating Council label on the glass showing they qualify for ENERGY STAR.

Installation makes the difference

Even the most efficient window will cost you money if it is installed badly. Installers who rely on sealants and expanding foam to get the fit right may get the window in, but it won’t be properly waterproof, and that leads to problems and lost energy all year.
